BFU-USA supports OCDA and pledges collaboration at OCDA's maiden convention

Olathe, KS: On Saturday, August 22nd, 2009, Tarbinlam Lafon, BFU-USA National President joined BFU New Jersey Kikum and BFU DC-Metro in supporting the Oku Cultural and Development Association (OCDA) during the cultural evening celebration of their first National Convention in Springfield, Virginia.

The evening began with a prayer and a minute of silence for Yaah Mildred Ayeah (R.I.P), who was also an integral part of the organization of the OCDA convention.  It must be noted that our OCDA and BFU-USA families are very intertwined already.

Our Oku siblings were very happy to have BFU-USA represented in the capacity of our National President, who called for closer collaboration between both organizations while citing examples of some initiatives BFU-USA had completed in Oku in the past years and in the same vein pledged $200.00 on behalf of BFU-USA as our support to the OCDA initiatives. He remarked that as BFU-USA continued its activities in all subdivisions in Bui, he hoped OCDA would also assist in providing valuable ground knowledge about the Oku subdivision, so we could better identify areas of need.

He also mentioned that he had already met with the newly elected OCDA National President, Mr. Christopher Yengo, earlier on that evening and hoped that this new bond at the National level will be duplicated at chapter levels.  Mr. Lafon noted that in their conversation, Mr. Yengo mentioned that BFU-USA and OCDA are all from the same compound, only from different doors.  This indicated the mindset with which both presidents would approach collaboration at various levels to ensure that both organizations meet their combined missions and visions.

BFU NJ Kikum and Bobongha marveled the audience twice, who quickly rose to their feet at the sweet melodies and rythmic movements of Kikum and Bobongha.  We congratulate BFU NJ Kikum for living our mission and being an example of reaching out to our Oku siblings.

The audience was especially treated to an amazing display of Oku Kikum, Njang and the exquisite Subi performance, which was truly electrifying.  We are very proud of and congratulate OCDA for their immense contributions in fostering and displaying Bui culture in the Diaspora. In order to make sure we document occurences such as these, we are reaching out and asking that anyone who took pictures of this great event should please send them to me (yaya.sendze-moussata@bfu-usa.org) so that we can give it the publicity and exposure it deserves on the BFU-USA website and other outlets.
We sincerely hope that these steps of collaboration will build on the efforts previous administrations had made in ensuring that BFU-USA becomes truly representative of Bui Division.

For, and on behalf of, BFU-USA
Yaya Sendze-Moussata
BFU-USA National Organizing Secretary
